Song Breakdown: Something Else

When we REALLY started exploring sounds, man, DIG IT! It was like, after doing rap for a little bit, Tyy and Me, we got down with Bearnard and he blew the whole lid off the dang thang, man! It was amazing! Slikk is a dj. So one day Tyy and me were bumming around, hear this thumping from Slikk's trailer... like a giant heartbeat. House Music. I'd heard of it, and even heard it before, but never really listened to it before, ya know? The way things are layered, the builds and drops, how they'll drop all of the bass and everything out in some drops to just have that reverb "concert hall" accapella vocal bit. The more you listen to music the more you learn and appreciate. The ideas come. You melt and lose yourself in the headphones. And that pulse, driving the whole thing. It's pretty amazing.

Hanging out with Bearnardo (Slikk) we got put on to so many sounds and styles of music, genres we had never even considered, because being klowns and kids from the city, some stuff was looked at as "not what we do", ya know? He didn't judge. On top of that, he loves music just as much as we do, so the cool stuff he's glad to share. If he saw we were curious about an artist or style, he'd pull it from his stacks if he had it, and explain it as best as he could for us. Kids are impressionable. You learn from even the smallest thing someone says, so when people say "This is white people music" then no matter how much you want to be included, you're not. Ignorance, a lot of the times, is both lovingly dealt and embraced. People like you tell you things, and since they're like you, you expect for the things they tell you to be beneficial, in your best interest. So, "we don't do that" must be for a good reason you figure. You get older and you learn to just try things for your self.

Music is one of those things that can't really hurt you... I mean, don't go listening to spells and incantations and shit. There are portals and stuff you can do, rituals and all of that, some Skeleton Key guided hypnoses Wounds type of shit, which actually kinda works how tattoos and Evan Treborn's losing and moving mind thru time episodes operate, but music itself is a spiritual thing. Be careful, be aware, but be open to understand, dig me? Every culture has it's thing. It's own style which tells its story, it's vibration, it's way of understanding and BEing, with it's own light and darkness, it's own gatekeepers, guardians, and demons. Some folks don't even understand and see the beauty in their own before they run off adopting and adapting to another's. You could call it sad, but it's free will, and everything is done for a reason, and usually that reason is linked to that person's degree of understanding how this will benefit them in this moment. If you're a samurai, you don't just go pick up hop hop culture because of curiosity alone, you have to understand that there's something in it for you. Usually what that thing is is some understanding of an opportunity for that individual to express and be their true full self, freely. Folks run there because, like i said, every culture has its lights and darks... understandings and ignorances. Like we were expected to be rappers and nothing more, even with Tyy playing the drums. Dig it, yeah, folks TELL YOU shit but their actions show how their hearts really think, and a lot of people are able to believe things they didn't think of their self, which also can override and overwrite how they feel. You might look at Tyy and me, trudging thru city streets of beer bottles and abandoned homes, swisher wrappers and glass and trash making the rubble fields glisten like the ocean at night and think, "Rappers. If they ain't playing in the band at church, it's R&B and Hip Hop. If they were old, maybe Jazz or funk. That kid has an afro, so he's not a Rasta, so it's not reggae..." which sends the message to us who are looking for ways to express our selves, ways to be our selves. If our environment is accepting of us doing those styles of music, more than likely we'll cling to that. Even if you KNOW or THINK that we would do well with other styles from other cultures, what you BELIEVE is that "This is what we do..." and possibly "...and what we do well, so they will be better off doing this. They'll do well at this, not that, because we don't really do that." The BELIEF may have come from someone else's thoughts which became their belief. It might even come from another culture to make sure they can "keep it in the family" which is a family you ain't a part of. THAT THOUGHT alone is kind of dumb, but makes sense AND DOLLARS, when you think of how much further the world would be if the race was just Human like it actually is. Every human would push for the betterment of every other human, and learn from every human, doing and offering the best, which means you'd also be receiving the best. But, we mass produce things to fail now, so we can maintain sales. Before they used to build things to last, and then try to make more and more efficient products, to last, to increase sales. Now it's just a shinier piece of crap, made of cheaper materials so it's "cheaper" which drives the sales. Before it was being wealthy we were pushing for, with long lasting pride and improvement. Now it seems like, and SEEMS LIKE is a good term because of how like i said BELIEFS might not be your own thoughts... but it seems like now, folks aren't pushing for, they're clinging to "making it" or running from poverty, with short lived patches and treatments, not cures or fixes, while the pride is an arrogant hole trying to find it's self. They don't improve, they re-finish or make-over. If you have a piece of crap, and you remake it, it's still a piece of crap... you just made two of them instead of one, and one is "newer" even though its the same thing as the one you made first. If what you focus on is the hole, and not your fullness, you'll never fill the hole because the hole is all you'll see. And folks lovingly pass this down now from generation to generation, reordering them, reprogramming them. Slikk changed all that for us... he helped break the cycle. Opened up worlds in a safe way. That's a friend. That's friggin dope. Then we got Charlie which just sealed the deal and pushed things even more. This song, "Something Else", is Pre-Charlie, believe it or not. That sound would not have come about if we went with the regularly scheduled programming. We're fortunate to have met them and got this thing to where it is, man, seriously. I appreciate that, and all of them. But, yeah, dig, so Slikk would play things like PORTISHEAD and TRICKY, THE CRYSTAL METHOD... MOBY, a bunch of stuff i'd never heard of, or only knew from movies, right! And he's all, "Why don't you do a song like that? That would be cool. You can do it." And so i asked him to do a beat, and as soon as i heard it, i just started writing, like i could see this movie of escaping the whole sideshow and city tours in trailers and all that, and i saw this whole new possibility open up. It was like driving down some Tron freeway or something, passing all of the things that trapped you in a box, seeing them play out in alleys as you pass, which is a vision that comes naturally and you think nothing of because you see it in real life so much that if you look out a window and see it you don't even notice it anymore... and it was just heading into this bright open space. That's what this song is about. Being tired of your chains and just breaking free, going 1 million miles an hour into a light that you may not even know what it is fully, but you understand there's room there. All of the other attempts and methods of escaping to try to find your self, you watch them pass... onto something else. Some folks can stay in the hole, but some folks need something else. No disrespect to where you came from, or where you are, but you know who you are is more than that. Doesn't have to be BIGGER because if you're bigger then you might not fit in where you are anymore... but you are more than where you are, so you can show folks there that they're more too, dig me? There's something for you that's you... but more than the you you've become in the present moment. You know it's not THIS... it's something else, ya know?

The image there was done to reflect the song. Kind of a shot taken at illusions, holograms, false realities... things you're programmed into believing. The face is even how you think what's right to you might be the thing that kills you, and is really a side and thing that should be left... behind. Music programs a lot of minds this way, entertainment and media in general, so branch out back into the natural ways that may have been left... by (to) you... where the vision is more open. Music might be a way of getting thru the glass ceiling into the infinite, but be careful because it's also a thing used to keep you in the box. Outside the box is... something else, just like the thought of something else swirling around your head. The present speakers might help you, so be sure you can see them clearly for what they are... just like the bright shining pieces of the past speakers, but understand how they're you as well... and you create your self. Don't let your box create you. Don't let your current mindset play you, because that same song and record on repeat gets old. It's safe and comfortable, but a part of the same grid and matrix game that keeps you here, not the dreams of freedom that got you here. Some revolution of the mind, and self, may be needed... you might have to turn some tables.... Meh, you get the picture.

"something else" - the zephaniah chesterfield project

Lyrics: kiss the dawn goodbye, it's on

watching the ceiling fan spin 'til it hits me

i see you riding next to me

past expectations we've conceived

pushing the brink of reality

break the chains, piercing free

look into my darkened eyes

where did i go?

what are we running from?

Faster and faster we go

deeper and deeper into the cold

with only our selves to hold

Why? We don't know, but i'll follow you

try to avoid being consumed

by our abundant lacking and lacking room

eyes race like pulses-- past alive

but lower than where we need to be

but i keep wasting my time

as life passes me by

i need a "Why" to proceed to bleed

or just wild out in the night deceased

cruise 'til sunset-- then do something else

on to Vegas-- then to something else

drinkin in the booty-house... time for something else

tryna find myself here... gotta do something else

what about me and you? yeeaah--that's hot to death

skin to skin, trading breaths, man, that's something else

losing my self in you-- slowly becoming something else

back to limbo... man this is something else

we've been high on fast times, watched the sun rise

written love letters to unborns and past lives

cried for futures that will never be

howling at the moon drifting aimlessly downtown

whether solo or in the middle of a crowd

last bucks and fast times-- need to slow down

i've found myself lost and found

bound and tryna be me as the world slips down

it's something else

but i keep wasting my time

as life passes me by

i need a "Why" to proceed to bleed

or just wild out in the night deceased

back to the world again, then where?-- somewhere else

tryna' find a time killer-- gotta do something else

pushing for perfection-- then want something else

whoa now, check your self-- then do something else

mobbin' in the moonlight-- onto something else

ain't no looking back-- gotta do something else

crash the gates and grab fate and take something else

bout to break but break for something else

used to crave injections, now i crave something else

looking in the mirror-- sometimes seeing someone else

tryna' stop the room from spinning, grab something else

reality done shifted, now i'm somewhere else

between breaths and death, fighting for something else

looking in your eyes and i feel something else

been a long hard ride-- now what?! something else

guess what i'm smiling for? ...not that, something else

i survived the night again-- here for something else

cut myself a couple times-- death by something else

fell in love a couple times-- death by something else

sick of the games-- i ain't tryna' play nothing else

what's the singer's singing for?-- seems like something else

what's the world spinning for?-- selling me something else

this ain't heaven or hell, this is something else

heard the truth a couple times... sounds like something else...

Faster and faster we go

deeper and deeper into the cold

with only our selves to hold

Why? We don't know, but i'll follow you

try to avoid being consumed

by our abundant lacking and lacking room

eyes race like pulses past alive...

....i need a "Why" to proceed to bleed

or just wild out in the night deceased
