Song Breakdown: Mama Gone

Blues. Playing around with some blues. It was a bit of an experiment in a lot of things. Done in the period where we were just messing around with music. Listening to a lot of different styles, and trying out a lot of styles. Not trying to FIND a sound or style, because as a band we don't care to have one, not as far as sounds. Maybe as far as vibes, yes. We'd came up with a genre a long while ago, called "Blacklight Vomit". Drink up the city, let it spin you and have a night you can't remember if you'd care to forget... and then puke it all up and see what living is now. That was the concept. Abstract, but, meh. So basically "Blacklight like the city and world at night" drink that deep, and then explode in an alley in the red light district, by the docks. Hmmm... that sounded more abstract than the first explanation. Anyways, it's a cool looking picture, and an interesting song. Cool if you're into that kinda thing.

Really dig how that track/song art came out. Like a lot. Me with the beard was inspired by Joaquin Phoenix when he grew that beard out. With the suit it looked classy. I remembered MCA (Beastie Boy, R.I.P.) had a bit of a goat beard. Black Thought's beard was epic, and in a suit... just cool af. The Roots and The Beasties are big inspirations, influences for sure. I was like, "Hey Charlie... I'm gonna grow a goat beard." It actually popped up in another song, "Skateboard Assassinn" that i think was on Charlie's album. Anyways, grew it out, rocked it for a while, now and then i'll do it again. I honestly hate shaving. But i hate ingrown hair and managing hair in general. But i hate having a cold face. It's a no win situation. Chops win! It's like having a Mohawk. You have hair but you don't. When you're stressed and want to mess with your hair, it's there. But when you wan to rub your head, its there too! All wins! Anyways, did that and i forget who did the image. It's usually Charlie or Byrdo (our musical big bro, does a lot for us. Unofficial fifth element of the band).

As far as lyrics and content, it's about reveling in freedom. It's kind of a sarcastic "I miss you babe" song. It comes off as that "beggin baby back" kinda blues, but when it was written it was completely the opposite. It's funny, people come and go. I call chicks "mama" sometimes. This time it was like singing a song to the earth, and all of the freedom in it. That's all gone when you're tied down. You lose a lot of your world in the compromises you make to be with someone else. A lot of the things they loved about you, that were so attractive are the first things they want to change once they... trap you. Things were supposed to be different. You get cold and depressed watching your real life call and you not answer. So, this song came from the point of "When you left me... or when i slipped away (ha ha, yeah)..." and it was going to be done completely different, but ....decided to go with those lyrics and see how it would sound as a chopped scratched blues-hop song. I enjoy writing. I'm good at it folks say. I guess, i dunno. I just have fun writing. Had fun writing this one. Cause i was in a having fun space. The lyrics are below this lovely picture which is the song/track art on the bandcamp page (where you can download it if you should so desire).

Lyrics: well i miss you mama

it's so cold out here

there ain't no water for this fire,

just a war for my soul

world's like a zombie

it's on the prowl

i see the moon rising high and i'm sinking in all the blood

it takes me down

i miss your hand

i miss your smile

here comes the pain

and i'm going down down down down down,

till i see you again...

i'm tired of fightin'

sick of the cops

and all this hustlin's just troublin'

I'm spinnin' grinnin' blind

i can't out drink it

it won't pray away

and i'm gon' war till the beast n' me done filled one of our graves

it takes me down

i miss your hand

i miss your smile

here comes the pain

and i'm going down down down down down,

till i see you again...

now when you left me... or when i slipped away

that was the day that it all went down

and now i'm left with nothing

nothing to lose

nothing to gain

i'm just a shadow in this sun set

some vampire of better daze

it takes me down

i miss your hand

i miss your smile

here comes the pain

and i'm going down down down down down,

till i see you again...

...period.
